Résumé : |
In recent years, biologists have come to recognize just how little we know about the organisms with which we share the planet Earth. In particular, attempts to determine how many species there are in total have been surprisingly fruitless. In this chapter, we do examine this and a number of related issues. Firstly, we consider the progress or rather the apparent lack of progress that we have made in describing organisms. Second, the study is focused on how much we know about the biology, distribution and threatened status of those species that have been described as well as the different methods that have been used to determine the global number of species and finally the author examines the likelihood of extinction of species. |
