Résumé :	The principal aim of this book is to analyze the strategic interplay between governments and firms in Asia. By examining the nature of japanese investment and trade strategies in developing asian markets across a variety of sectors and by comparing japanese firms with american and european firms, it’s benefique to understand the factors that affect competitive success. This chapter presents the analytical framework and theoretical approach that forms the foundation for the empirical analysis in this volume. So the analysis is divided in many parts, the first part talks about the term ‘positional analysis’ meaning how market forces, the nonmarket environment and firm competencies influence firms’ choices of trade and investment at the national, regional or global level. The second part focuses on ‘strategic analysis’ , id est, an examination of the choices firms that make in response to their market environments, a distributive politics analysis of nonmarket issues, and a transaction cost analysis of organizational forms for market penetrations. These elements combine to influence the firm’s integrated strategic choice. Once these strategies are formulated, firms can choose from a range of options for implementation.

Résumé :	This chapter analyses the motivations and trends of japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) in Asia with a focus on the strategies implemented by japanese firms. In section II, the author assessed various patterns in japanese FDI by splitting the analysis into pre- and postcrisis periods. In sections III and IV, he examines the motives of japanese FDI in Asia and the problems japanese firms face in Asia respectively. Section V covers the impact of the crisis on the business strategies of japanese firms, while section VI focuses on their future FDI plans. Section VII examines Japan’s trade with Asia and finally section VIII presents some concluding remarks.

Résumé :	This chapter is organized as follows, section II summarizes the expansion and contraction of japanese banking activity abroad in the 1980s and 1990s and the evolution of the japanese banking system crisis at home in the 1990s. Section III examines the strategic response of Japanese banks to the East Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998 and how their nonmarket approaches failed. Section IV discusses the way in which Japanese banks are responding to the new market environment by consolidating their activities in the domestic and foreign markets through mergers, integration and alliances. Section V provides a brief overview of the business activities with a focus on East Asian operations of the big four financial groups that are expected to dominate the Japanese banking industry .

Résumé :	The breakup of AT&T in the United States and the privatization of NTT in Japan and British Telecom in the United Kingdom affected the structure of the international telecommunications industry. The trend toward telecom reform is also sweeping across the developing world. Corporatization, privatization and the introduction of competition are becoming widespread in Asian developing countries. There are two principal reasons for the recent popularity of these reforms. First, many governments have come to realize that telecommunications play an increasingly important role in determining the competitiveness of nations. Second, even developed countries are confronted with the problem of establishing a world-class telecommunications infrastructure without relying on private investment. The development of privatization and competition in telecommunications have enhanced market growth and development. East Asia is among the fastest growing regions in telecommunications. Despite the setback in overall economic growth, the information and telecommunication industries continue to grow. In addition, East Asia, except Indonesia, has shown a strong recovery in GDP growth.

Résumé :	Until the early 90s, Asia has been no more than a peripheral part of the overall strategy of most software companies, today it forms a major strategic focus for many of the biggest players. With continuing economic growth, growing middle classes, well educated workforces, stable political systems and expanding technological bases, East Asian computer hardware and software growth has been impressive throughout the past decade, reaching consistent annual growth rates in some countries. Because the software industry is characterized by network externalities and high and high fixed costs, many believe that first-mover advantages are particularly strong in this industry. Because of the rapid diffusion of both cheaper workstations and PCs, widespread opportunities have emerged for creative software solutions in a broad range of highly specialized applications. Although, determining boundaries in the traded software sector does not escape these problems, the focus on firms that are producers of traded software for sale in a global market allows to track a specific commodity. Tracking the contribution of the packaged software component from services such as installation, systems integration and maintenance is a more manageable task than disaggregating a customized solution. Fujitsu was chosen for the focused case study because it is one the few Japanese software firms that has a presence in the developing asian market both as a producer and exporter. In addition, Fujitsu is considered to be one of the top producers of high-quality software for the global market and was the first Japanese computer manufacturer to make the successful transition to a global software and services company. Accordingly, the next sections will provide a general context for the analysis of Fujitsu in relation to the software industry in developing Asia.
