Résumé : |
The breakup of AT&T in the United States and the privatization of NTT in Japan and British Telecom in the United Kingdom affected the structure of the international telecommunications industry. The trend toward telecom reform is also sweeping across the developing world. Corporatization, privatization and the introduction of competition are becoming widespread in Asian developing countries.
There are two principal reasons for the recent popularity of these reforms. First, many governments have come to realize that telecommunications play an increasingly important role in determining the competitiveness of nations. Second, even developed countries are confronted with the problem of establishing a world-class telecommunications infrastructure without relying on private investment.
The development of privatization and competition in telecommunications have enhanced market growth and development. East Asia is among the fastest growing regions in telecommunications. Despite the setback in overall economic growth, the information and telecommunication industries continue to grow. In addition, East Asia, except Indonesia, has shown a strong recovery in GDP growth.
