This chapter is organized as follows, section II summarizes the expansion and contraction of japanese banking activity abroad in the 1980s and 1990s and the evolution of the japanese banking system crisis at home in the 1990s. Section III examines the strategic response of Japanese banks to the East Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998 and how their nonmarket approaches failed. Section IV discusses the way in which Japanese banks are responding to the new market environment by consolidating their activities in the domestic and foreign markets through mergers, integration and alliances. Section V provides a brief overview of the business activities with a focus on East Asian operations of the big four financial groups that are expected to dominate the Japanese banking industry . |
