The first set of experiments studied the combined effects of pesticides and fertilizer in an experimental design of 64 plots in the IRRI (International Rice Research Institute) farm. The second set of experiments studied the combined effects of pesticide application and fish introduction in an experimental design of 12 plots established at the Central Luzon State University of the Philippines. Field surveys were conducted in thirty-two farms of the Laguna region where significant levels of agrochemical (average : 1.5kg active ingredient (ai) of pesticides and 95kg N.P.K. fertilizer/ha/crop) are used and in thirty farms of the Lucban region, where fertilizer use was known to be minimal and pesticide applications absent.
