The functionality of this aquatic community depends on the relative and absolute population densities of the various groups and their activity rates. The widespread introduction of chemical pesticides to control rice pests has increased grain yields, however , because pesticides are often unspecific, they have the potential to modify the soil-floodwater communities of wetland ricefields. It is important to understand and predict how pesticide use affects the ecology of the ecosystem and to consider the implication of these changes for rice production and rice-producing environments.
