The challenge is to meet human needs without denying our descendant’s birthright to the natural inheritance of this planet. While farms designed in nature’s image may provide the ecological ingredients of sustainability, this is only part of the picture of sustainable agriculture, for it is also necessary to address how people fit into the system. The scientific feasibility of perennial polycultures may be irrelevant if they prove to be impractical from a social, economic or institutional viewpoint.
This chapter addresses some of the human aspects of the feasibility of perennial polycultures. Whereas some aspects of present-day culture are highly conservative and bode ill for such a radical change in how food is grown, other signs are hopeful, indicating that change is already afoot. While a thorough review of all the consequences of such a change is beyond the authors’ predictive powers, the chapter begins by addressing three important concerns : food costs, acceptance of of new foods and effects on farm size, profitability, social sustainability. The namibian agricultural sector has a dual system comprising a well developed, capital intensive and export oriented commercial sub-sector and a subsistence-based communal farming sub-sector, low in technology and external inputs and highly labour intensive. Agriculture supports about 70 percent of the country’s population, however , the capacity of a farming system to adapt to changing weather and climate conditions is based on its natural resource endowment and associated economic, social, technology and political conditions. The paper discussed the theoretical framework for the interface between research and extension. The aim of this study is to assess agricultural research and extension activities in Namibia that aim at improving rural households’ livelihood in the globally-changing environment. The presentation will be illustrated by many examples from the realms of crop and livestock production including seed multiplication, soil fertility, conservation tillage, animal draft power and livestock improvement schemes. The study found sufficient evidence that some research-extension strategies being employed are relatively successful. The main challenge remains to strength national agricultural resaerch system with an appropriate institutional and coordinating structure, focusing on decentralised adaptive research and on farm trials. The objective is to bold the benefits of the RaE/EaR approaches in optimizing extension services and its delivery to livestock farmers. It is hypothesized that in addition to enhancing the delivery of the intended veterinary information package to farmers the approaches also integrate research and extension more effectively and efficiently hence reducing the existing research-extension gap. Hopefully the discussion from this analysis will promote researchers in other agricultural fields to adopt the RaE/EaR approaches.
