Résumé : |
This paper gives an overview of the panicle insect pest situation in southern and eastern Africa. Sorghum panicle insect pests were of little importance in long duration African landrace sorghums in southern and eastern Africa, but this situation could change with the development of new high-yelding, short-duration cultivars with more compact panicles, and the changing agronomic practices. Head bugs, Helicoverpa, and the armoured cricket have recently become important. This paper discusses pest biology, wherever known, the effect of agronomic practices on pest populations and possibilities for control under farmers’ field conditions. Some recommendations for future research are also presented. |
